Dancehall star Popcaan has seemingly hinted that a departure from the Drake-founded OVO sound could be coming soon following a recent interview with Crack Magazine.
OVO Sound is the label imprint for Drakes’ October’s Very Own (OVO) brand.
In what appeared to be a candid interview with the publication, the ‘Firm and Strong’ deejay, shared his thoughts about his music, influences, and among other things, his impending musical independence.

“The label can be weird sometimes. I love the label but I don’t like them,” Poppy stated. “But I’ll be independent soon,” he continued.
The Unruly boss who has been signed to the Toronto-based label since 2018, did not go into the specifics of how long “soon” would be nor the reason for the hinted split.
He did however share that he has a lot of music to release.
The ‘Way Up’ singer added that he wants Jamaican artistes to move away from the sporadic releasing of singles and move toward album geared drops.
So much so was his conviction to the new direction that he will be looking to drop a new album this year, according to Crack.
“Because no one’s doing it, I try to appeal to my Jamaican artists, telling all of them to put out more albums.”
“People just see Jamaican music as singles.”
By all accounts, there seems to be no rift between Poppy and Drizzy who both teamed up on his second official single- ‘We Caa done’ in January ahead of the Album’s official release later that month.
The two have collaborated on a handful of tracks over the years including the remix to Drake’s Controlla and Twist and Turn on Popcaan’s ‘Fixtape’ album in 2020.
It is still a wait-and-see whether the release of a second Popcaan project this year will coincide with the split or if it will also be under the label.
Three of Popcaan’s last five albums (Vanquish, Fixtape, and GIHE) have all been under OVO sound.
