Police assigned to the Portland branch have launched a probe in relation to an explosion which occurred at an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) at the Scotiabank branch in Port Antonio, Portland.
So far, the police have indicated that investigators are now following strong leads and expect to make a breakthrough in short order.
Head of the Portland Police Division, Superintendent Kenneth Chin says a person of interest is being sought in relation to the incident.
“Based on the information that we have at this time we believe that the explosion was caused by some criminal activity. So, we are following strong leads and we have teams from the various departments in the police force who are doing all that they can to get to the bottom of this incident.”
Additionally, the explosion which reportedly yields a $ 12 million loss, has accounted for one casualty as an unidentified male was injured in the melee and is currently being treated in hospital.
Further reports outlined that a section of the bank, which houses two ATMs, was destroyed in an explosion heard at approximately 4:10 am on Saturday.
On arrival, officers observed fire and smoke coming from the front of the building. Further investigations also revealed that the two ATMs were also destroyed during the explosion.
