National record holder Rajindra Campbell will be looking to deliver Jamaica’s first medal at the 2023 World Championships when he steps up to contest the men’s Shot Put on Saturday.
Campbell, Jamaica’s lone competitor in the event, will kick off the country’s participation in Budapest when he steps inside the circle in Group A of the qualifying round.
The 27-year-old enters the championships as a strong medal contender after registering the fourth furthest distance this season to make the team.
Campbell’s qualifying shot put came just before the championships, after heaving a massive 22.22m pb to win the Meet de Madrid event in July.
His performance not only exceeded the qualifying standard of 21.40m but also demolished the national record of 21.96m previously held by O’Dayne Richards.
Qualifying for that event is set for 4:30 am Jamaica time, with the finals coming later at 2:35 pm.
Jamaica will also be chasing medal success on the track when the team lines up for the 4x400m mixed relays on Saturday.
The team, which consists of Rusheen McDonald, D’Andre Anderson, Joanne Reid and Stacy Ann Williams, will line up in the second and final heat of the event.
Qualifying is scheduled for a 4:05 am start and the final at 2:47 pm.
The women’s 1500m heats will conclude Jamiaca’s track participation on the day; however, the field events will present a more active schedule for the athletes.
The men’s Discus Throw, men’s Triple Jump and women’s Long Jump are the other events to be contested on Saturday.
