Mexico vs. Jamaica, CONCACAF Nations League LAPRESSE

Despite a valiant performance by the Reggae Boyz, they fell just short of advancing to the semi-finals of League A in the CONCACAF Nations League tournament following their 2-2 draw against Mexico at the Azteca Stadium on Sunday.

The Boyz came into the fixture on five points, two behind the hosts (7 pts) needed to win to leapfrog Mexico for that top spot.

Jamaica looked to be on their way as early as the 7th minute following a brilliant Bobby Reid screamer from outside the box to silence the vociferous home crowd at a capacity Azteca Stadium.

Despite the Mexicans coming back 10 minutes later via an Oberline Pineda strike in minute 17, the visiting Jamaican reclaimed their advantage after forcing an own in the 32nd minute.

Celebrations were abbreviated in the first half after conceding a late penalty, which Hirving Lazano converted to bring Mexico level, as both teams entered the break leveled at 2-2.

That was where the goals ended as both teams kept a tight defense shift to again share a point, which was good enough for the Mexicans who sealed semi-final round appearance as group winners with nine points, two more than Jamaica who finish runners up in their group.

Despite missing the semis in the Nations League, the Boyz, however, secured qualification for the Gold Cup tournament which is slated to kick off later this year.
