Ronaldo breaks records in Portugal Euro qualification opener

Cristiano Ronaldo continues to write his own chapter in the football record books after making a world-record 197th international appearance for Portugal as well as extending his own scoring record in their Euro 2024 qualifying opener against Lithuania on Thursday.

Ronaldo moved level with former record-holder Bader Al-Mutawa of Kuwait forward after notching his 196th cap when he faced Morocco at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The 38-year-old who was referred to as an important piece to Portugal’s team by new manager Roberto Martinez repaid the faith with goals on his return.

The Portugal captain, who already held the record for most international goals coming into the game with 118 strikes extended that mark to 120.

Ronaldo scored Portugal’s third and fourth goal with a 56th-minute penalty to make it 3-0.

Ronaldo doubled his tally in the 63rd minute to make it 4-0 after Joao Cancelo and Bernardo Silva doubled Portugal’s advantage in minutes 8 and 47.

The game ended 4-0 in favor of the former champions as the 2022 World Cup quarter-finalist make a strong start to their Euro campaign in group J.
