Following a series of alleged incidents during school devotions in the last academic year, the Education Ministry has issued draft guidelines on how devotions should be conducted.
According to Education Minister Fayval Williams, the guidelines are designed to uphold civility and teach the core universal values that are milestones in the character-building of the nation.

She says devotions should and must contribute to the holistic development of students.
While the guidelines have not been finalized, Mrs. Williams called on school boards and teachers to send their feedback to the Ministry, so that the process can be completed.
The suggested guidelines have not been made public.
The incident that escalated this move by the government came last year when there were concerns about devotions being banned in schools due to a bizarre incident that happened at Oberlin High School.
It was reported several students fainted while teachers prayed and some were taken to the hospital – no one was hurt.
