Two-time women’s 200m World Champion Shericka Jackson is among 11 women shortlisted for the 2023 World Athletics Athlete of the Year Award.
Jackson’s nomination was revealed by World Athletics via their social media pages on Wednesday.
The double-diamond league winner is expected to be among the favourites to claim the award following a stellar year which included posting three of the five fastest times ever over 200m (21.41s, 21.48s and 21.57s) in addition to her securing World Champs gold.
She also bagged silver in the 100m and 4x100m relay.
Jackson, who is the only Jamaican listed this year, will face competition from fellow favorites; women’s 400m hurdles World Record holder Femke Bol of the Netherlands and Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon, the World 1500m and 5000m champion, who set world records 1500m, mile and 5000m in 2023.
100m World Champion Sha’Carri Richards of the USA also made the cut after her break-out year, which saw her post a massive 10.6 Personal record on her way to the world title in addition to 4×100 relay gold in Budapest.
The other nominees include Japan’s Javelin World Champ Haruka Kitaguchi, High Jump World and Diamond League winner Yaroslava Mahuchikh of Ukraine, and four-time triple jump champion Yulimar Rojas of Venezuela is also among the top contenders for the award.
Diamond League 5000m champion and world record holder Gudaf Tsegay of Ethiopia, Bahrain’s Winfred Yavi- 3000m steeplechase World champion and Spain’s Maria Perez, who captured the 20km and 35km race walk gold in Budapest, completes the shortlist.
