The People’s Nation Party (PNP), felt the ire of social on Monday, following their passage through Central Kinston after images were posted of the mass gatherings in streets in the morning.
Opposition General Secretary, Dr Dayton Campbell, was subject to the brunt of criticism after posting images of the party’s activity via his Twitter social media platform. The images, which show mainly mask-less supporters, are seen closely gathered and captioned “mobilizing the base”.
A post which many didn’t take kindly, as it was followed a by a wave of criticism online.
“Look at the small children who are unvaccinated. There is ONE mask in this photo,” one user commented. “Nuff orange but few masks, wah kinda doctor this?” another user remonstrated.
Dr Campbell, who is a medical doctor by profession, was chided for his alleged disregard of health and safety protocols during the ‘meeting up’ given his background.
He was, however, quick to dispel the notion of encouraging mass gatherings and protocol breaches, insisting the supporters voluntarily came out on learning that the party’s President Mark Golding, was walking through the area.
In an interview with Nationwide News, Dr Campbell asserted that they [PNP] used the opportunity to encourage vaccination to the following in hand.
Dr Campbell was also quick to highlight masks were indeed distributed on location despite the rarity of face coverings seen in the posts.
He posited, that the post was taken out of context, insisting they were simply “touching base” with the community and not rallying people for election activities.
“We mobilizing the place in that we’re on the ground touching base with the people… they have been really crying out about what’s been happening,” he said. “We are not paying for people to come out, the Prime Minister has not called an election, so we are just doing what a party does connect with the communities,” he added.
