A Somalian sprinter Nasra Ali Abukar has sparked controversy and accusations of nepotism for an embarrassingly slow performance at the World University Games in Chengdu, China.

Abukar is the niece of the Senior Vice President of the Somali Athletics Federation.

She finished last in the 100-meter race, clocking an extremely disappointing 21 seconds, Anadolu Agency reports.

This according to many is not a case of simply not having the same resources as other countries, because Somalia has an incredible running culture to pull athletes from. Furthermore, the other athlete representing Somalia qualified for the final of the men’s 1500m with one of the top times.

Amid the controversy, Khadija Aden Dahir, the Senior Vice President of the Somali Athletics Federation posted a congratulatory note to her niece.

A number of persons have since expressed outrage or disappointment about the matter.
