SportsMax is again showcasing its longstanding commitment to developing youth through sports as one of the main sponsors for the Goodwill Jamaica National Swim Team.

The team of twenty-five, aged 9-17, will participate in the upcoming XXVI Goodwill Swim Meet in Trinidad & Tobago from August 19-21. The National Federations of Trinidad & Tobago, Barbados, St Lucia, Guyana, Suriname, Bahamas, Grenada and Curacao will also participate in the regional event.

SportsMax will provide athletes, and team officials with Digicel Roam Easy plans so they can stay connected to friends and family while in Trinidad & Tobago. The Caribbean Prepaid and Postpaid Roam Easy plans include generous data allotments, free incoming calls, free incoming SMS and reduced rates for outgoing voice calls.

“At Digicel, we believe in supporting our youth from grassroots to greatness because we recognize the power of sports in improving lives”, noted Digicel Marketing Executive Orion Aitken.

“Our support for the Team Jamaica swimmers also aligns with our Jamaica 60 celebrations, as we aim to promote nationalism and empower our people. We look forward to Team Jamaica’s performance at the XXVI Goodwill Games, and anticipate positive results.”

Speaking at a recent press conference to announce the team’s plans for the meet, Vice President of the Aquatic Sports Association of Jamaica, Georgina Sinclair, explained that the Goodwill Swim Meet is the premier swim meet in the Caribbean and is a launching pad toward higher levels of competition.

She shared, “The competition at the Goodwill Meet is fierce and provides swimmers with a taste of the regional rivalry. In 2019, members unanimously voted for Jamaica to become a member of Goodwill; this should have been ratified in 2020 but was delayed due to the pandemic.

We will, therefore, officially be welcomed into the fold at this year’s meet. I wish the 2022 team the best as they set their sights on representing Jamaica well.”

Goodwill Jamaica National Swim Team Head Coach Kafia Rapley excitedly shared, “I’ve been to every Goodwill Swim Meet so far, and the experience and exposure it gives the swimmers is incredible. It gives young swimmers a taste of real competition.

It may also encourage them to go even further in their swimming careers. I expect most, if not all, of our swimmers to achieve personal best times and receive individual medals. Our relay teams are also looking very good to come home with medals.

The sponsorship support we have received is greatly appreciated; it motivates the team because they realize that people at home believe in them, and it inspires them to go out and do their best.”

Team Jamaica first participated in the Goodwill Swim Meet in 2018 with a contingent of 32 swimmers and took home 32 medals. That performance was doubled in 2019 when the 40-strong team copped the second place award for overall performance with a whopping 65 medals. The meet was put on hold until 2022 due to the global pandemic.

Digicel wishes the team a safe journey, injury-free competition and most importantly, we encourage the swimmers to have fun.
