Strike force: know the Reggae Boyz forwards

With January coming to a close and World Cup Qualifiers are set to be back in action this week, the 1998 participant Reggae Boyz will also return to action.

In football, there is a known phrase ‘goals win games’ and that is what the boys, who are laying sixth, will need to advance.

With the squad now settled, let us take a look at who will be charged with putting keepers to work in qualifications.

British-born Michal Antonio kicks off the list. The 31-year-old, who recently made his debut for the Reggae Boyz, has been easily a marquee player since dawning the gold and green jersey.

He netted twice in his last two games, including a goal of the qualification contender in the 1-1 draw against the US. Antonio currently plays for English Premier League team West Ham and is among the most efficient in goal involvements for the Hammers, including five goals and eight assists this season.

The striker has 54 goals in 181 appearances with 25 assists in his club career.

Fulham forward Bobby Decordova Reid is the next English-based player. The 24-year-old will partner with Antonio up front, as the team seeks to create a menacing force in attacking. He is among the leaders in assist in the English Championship this season.

Junior Flemmings will also make a return to the national team for this campaign. The former Tivoli FC, who recently signed to French division 1 team Toulouse FC, is expected to add some additional firepower to the squad. Flemmings was the top scorer in the United Soccer League (USL) in the 2019/20 season.

Veteran attacker Javon East also joins Jamaica’s strike force for qualification. The former Portmore United winger currently plays for Costa Rican 1st division outfit Santos De Guapiles.

Philadelphia Union’s Corey Burke and QPR’s Andre Grey round out the forward line for the team.

Burke, who has had a lukewarm season in the MLS, will be looking to add to his solitary goal for the Reggae Boyz, after his recall, while Grey is hoping to score his maiden goal for the country.
