Australian Big Bash T20 Franchise Sydney Thunder created cricket history, but not the one they would have wanted as they were bowled out for a world record low of 15 runs by the Adelaide Strikers on Friday in a league game.
The Thunder chasing a victory target of 140 from their 20 overs, were bundled out in just 35 deliveries, with the top score of four runs coming from their number 10 batsman Brendan Doggett.
The astounding collapse of Thunder’s innings at the crease saw five players dismissed without scoring in the worst innings ever for a t20 game, eclipsing the previous lowest score of 21 runs by Turkey against the Czech Republic in 2019.
What started as a routine target for one of franchise cricket’s biggest teams ended as a nightmare fall into the abyss of cricketing infamy that will surely haunt the batters for years to come.
While Friday’s game was a horror story for the Thunders batsmen, it will however be remembered as a day of delight for the Strikers bowlers.
Henry Thornton bagged 5-3 while Wes Agar snared 4-6 in a devastating inning of pace bowling which left the Sydney players jolted like a lightning strike from which they were unable to recover.
In addition to being the lowest t20 score ever recorded, it was also their innings of 5.5 overs were also the shortest in men’s T20 history.
“I feel like I need to retire now. I don’t think I’m getting better than that,” a jubilant Thorton joked while speaking to the local press.
“I honestly cannot believe what just happened. I think everyone here probably doesn’t know what is going on either. It was amazing.”
