Two killed in St Ann train crash

Two people were killed after a bauxite train derailed in Retreat district, St Ann on Sunday night.

The deceased have been identified as Shane Powell, a security guard of a Clarendon address and Orlando Brown of Brown’s Town St Ann. Brown is said to be the operator of the train.

It’s understood that the incident took place at 10:00 p.m., both men were aboard the train when it developed mechanical problems, derailed the track, and crashed in a gully. Both men sustained multiple injuries and died on the spot.

Shortly after the crash occurred, firefighters and the police were called to the scene and a subsequent investigation was launched.

This is the second fatal accident which occurred in the parish within the space of four days.

Prior to the Retreat train accident, a Steer Town fisherman and two other victims were killed, and twenty others injured following a two-vehicle collision along the Laughlands main road in St Ann on Friday.

The deceased has been identified as Alwayne Smith; the identities of the remaining victims have not yet been released.

The crash happened Friday at around 7:30 a.m. after the car that was travelling eastward to St Ann’s Bay allegedly got out of control and slammed into the bus which was travelling in the opposite direction.
