Tyrone Wilson will not put himself up to become the Jamaica Labour Party’s (JLP) candidate for Mayor of Portmore in the next local government elections.

The decision by Wilson has given gospel radio broadcaster, Markland Edwards, a fillip in his bid to get the ruling party’s nod in the only direct election for mayor across the island.

According to Wilson, president and CEO of iCreate Limited, a creative training company listed on the Junior Market of the Jamaica Stock Exchange, he will be joining forces with Edwards to create a better Portmore.

“Both of us share a similar vision and passion for the development of Portmore and it may be best to merge the thoughts and ideas and put the support behind one candidate instead of creating any division at this point,”

Wilson said.

Edwards said he is anticipating working with Wilson.

“I am humbled by Mr Wilson’s selflessness and his decision to throw his support behind my mayoral candidate bid for the JLP. I do not take this endorsement for granted, as Mr Wilson is a talented and innovative Jamaican entrepreneur and product of Portmore.

“He has much to contribute to the political landscape and people of the Sunshine City. I look forward to having further discussions with him about our plans for the municipality and how our collective ideas and unique skill set can be used to move the city towards greater levels of prosperity,”

Edwards said.

The JLP will select a candidate to go up against Leon Thomas, who is the current Mayor of Portmore and represents the People’s National Party (PNP). It is understood that the selection will be made from a list that includes, former mayor Keith Hinds and councillor Keith Blake.

The residents of Portmore will vote directly for the mayor, which is unlike the other municipalities in the island. The party that wins the most seats in the other municipalities selects the mayor.
