Vini jr gets support from Madrid in wake of racial abuse

Real Madrid and Brazil star Vinicius Jr, received an overwhelming show of support from the club and its fans during their 2-1 win over Rayo Vallecano in the wake of recent racial abuse in La Liga.

Vinicius missed the fixture due to a thigh injury however was in the stands for the encounter.

Madrid players took to the pitch dawning the number 20 jersey to support the star, while the captains of both teams wore armbands carrying anti-racism messages

Supporters also chanted the 22-year-old’s name in the 20th minute in solidarity.

Players from both teams had joined together prior to kick-off to hold a sign which read “Racists [get] out of football”.

The striker was the subject of racial abuse by Valencia fans during last weekend’s fixture in La Liga, where he was also sent off.

Vini, whose red card against Valencia has been rescinded, was applauded as he took to the pitch before the match.

Vinicius stood in acknowledgment of support and later posted a picture of him waving to fans on Instagram, accompanied by the message: “I love them! Thank you, thank you and thank you”

The gesture was sweetened by Madrid’s victory which was sealed by fellow Brazilian- Rodrygo whose 89th-minute strike sealed the deal after Karim Benzema’s 31st-minute opener was canceled out by Rayo’s Raul de Tomas in minute 86.

The result moves Madrid ahead of rival Atletico Madrid with 74 points.
