Westmoreland man arrested after stealing $17,496 in coins from shop

Twenty-three-year-old Delroy Clarke, labourer of Bethel Town, Westmoreland, was arrested and charged with shop breaking and larceny following an incident that took place along Beaufort main road, Darliston in the parish on Tuesday, March 1.

Reports from the Westmoreland Police are that about 6:30 pm, a man securely locked his shop and left for home. Minutes later he received information that strange sounds were heard inside his business place and sought the assistance of the Darliston Police, who responded swiftly.

Upon their arrival, Clarke was seen running from the building with a black knapsack. The police gave chase and apprehend Clarke and searched the bag, where coins amounting to JM$17,496.00 were found inside.

The cash was later identified as the shop owner’s property, which was stolen from his establishment. Subsequent checks revealed that entry to the building was gained by prying the grille at the front.

Clarke was charged and his court date is being scheduled.
