As anxiety mounts ahead of the 65th annual Grammy Awards scheduled for Sunday, among the keenly watched categories will be the winner of the Best Reggae Album category.

This year’s category is among the most open in years with no clear-cut favorites and includes newcomers, past winners, and past nominees who all put out solid projects over the last 12 months.

The nominees are Reggae sensations Koffee, Kabaka Pyramid, and Protoje, along with juggernauts Shaggy and Sean Paul.

The all-Jamaican nominations list was a significant highlight for many industry players and fans in the local space who felt taken aback by the 2022 win of California-based Reggae Group Soja over their Jamaican counterparts.

A case that led to led very vigorous discourses locally on the debated drop in quality output from the island itself as well as whether Jamaicans should have a monopoly on the genre and how the grammy selections work.

Given that this year’s set of nominees is all locally based those debates will at least moment be tempered before Sunday’s ceremony.

Both Koffee and Sean Paul aiming for their second grammy come Sunday.

Koffee who made history as the first female and youngest to win a Reggae Grammy for her Rapture EP in 2020 will be seeking grammy number 2 with her Gifted Album.

10-time nominee Dutty Paul himself -Sean Paul who took home the 2003 award for his iconic ‘Dutty Rock project will also gunning for his second grammy with ‘Scorcha’.

However, two-time winner Shaggy will be hoping to secure a third golden record player (Grammy) for his ‘Come Fly With Me’ album.

Second-time nominee Protoje- Third’s a charm and Kabaka Pyramid-Kalling will both be hunting their first grammy award.

The 65th Grammy awards ceremony will take place at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles
