Williams receives standing ovation following Canada open exit

23-time Grand slam Champion Serena Williams received and resounding standing ovation from the Canada open crowd, after her second-round loss to Belinda Bencic in Canada on Thursday.

It was a bitter sweet moment for the both players as Williams who went down made what was most likely one of her last appearances in the sport after announcing her impending departure from the sport.

The former number 1 seed went down in straight sets; 6-1,6-2 to the 12th seed Swizz in her first match since her retire hints on Tuesday.

Following her final decision all officials were on their feet in applause as they recognized the American great for her career accomplishments, relishing the last few moments of an icon active on court.

An emotional Williams thanked the crowd’s support following the game.

“It was a lot of emotions obviously,” Williams said.

“I love playing here, I’ve always loved playing here. I wish I could have played better but Belinda played so well today. It’s been an interesting 24 hours ” she added

“As I said in the article, I’m terrible at goodbyes. But, goodbye Toronto.”

Following the match, a tearful Williams was presented with jerseys of basketball team Toronto Raptors and ice hockey team, Toronto Maple Leaves for her and daughter Olympia.

“I was really happy to be out here today and play in front of you guys,” she said. “Thanks for the support. Thank you” the tennis legend closed.

Williams who announced stated that she will be “evolving away from tennis” is widely expected to make her official departure from the sport at the US open, where she won her first major title in 1999.
